All About Me Activity Cards in Action

I have used All About Me Family Counters for a few years. They are the go to, grab and go activity as all three of my children now play with them, in different ways.

I did have a male ECE correct my stereotyping as I displayed them with the baby on the Mama’s hip and have successfully balanced the baby on the Papa’s hip also!

These counters are the perfect size for dramatic play/restaurant waiting/older sibling activity waiting, and of course for their original design: math concept teaching!

The students are watching a demonstration of how to continue a sequence, such as the purple, blue, purple, blue, you can see in the bottom left of the photo. They are also reinforcing characteristic description such as “smaller”, “boy”, colours and patterning.

Adding: person and cat style! Our next step is to use the formal written number which some of these students are still learning (we were reinforcing the subtraction with finger counting here!).

Jumbo Number Pebbles and Halloween Fun

We borrowed these Jumbo Number Pebbles to play with a few days ago.

They are lovely to lift and play with, feeling like real pebbles. As with all our pebbles, they are made from a unique stone mix, engraved and painted. The numbers just have to be felt and traced with your finger as you hold them!

Counting

Daisy has a wonderful natural teaching ability and began matching the numbers with the Halloween rubbish (I mean… toys). She was counting in French as she was doing it and encouraging Rose to join in.

She then organised the snakes and spiders around the number.

Fred on the other hand took pleasure in banging them together with force so they made a satisfying clunk! Each to their own.

Ten scary Halloween things.

As you can see the Jumbo Number Pebbles are strong, like pebbles really. They are open ended, always a favourite in our house, and can be used in many ways. They would be perfect in the sand tray or water table and can be used indoors or outdoors. The sorting, transporting and game options are endless and with two of each number there are plenty to share.

Crocodile Hop Review

We are always on the look out for games both children can play at the same time. Crocodile Hop fits into this category. It is labelled 3+ but can be extended to be suitable for pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms.

The activity guide explains how to play the game 3 different ways and includes 4 activities aimed at developing specific learning objectives.

We started with a basic game variation.

The first job was to figure out the die. One indicated colour and the other shape. They took turns naming the colour or shape, Rose being gently corrected by Daisy if needed. Daisy decided on rules. I wanted to intervene but forced myself to allow her to decide on the ground rules.

The crocodile was on both dice and she decided rolling the crocodile meant you had to go back to the start… a long game perhaps?

However she also decided to use both die and this should make the game quicker.

Using both die gave a colour and shape. Rose and I practised finding shapes and colours, and the game began. A recommendation is to wear shoes or have bare feet. The vinyl floor mat can be slippery.

Daisy helped Rose find the next shape and colour she had rolled.

And of course they rolled lots of crocodiles.

Lots of fun and the girls are eager to try out other games and activity options for the Crocodile Hop.

I am not sure if it is the colour, the quality or the sheer amount of people that has the appeal but something works!

Daisy enjoyed organising them into parties. Here is a circle of friends.

She made patterns and asked Rose, “What comes next?”.

These counters are designed for making your family, patterning, sorting and counting but in our house everything is used for dramatic play.

Yet another of the girls parties. Rose likes to grab a few people, have conversations and move them about the house.

Sorting Fruit by Colour

All that gorgeous fruit from the Avalanche Fruit stand was just asking to be used in other ways. One of the ways we played with it was sorting by colour on the light table.

Daisy instantly decided on her method. She started picking out the blackberries nearest to her and putting them on the purple paper.

Rose watched Daisy for a few seconds and then got to work on her oranges, again choosing to work on one type of fruit at a time.

Rose’s hand was struggling to lift with the tweezers and she was about to drop the tweezers when I asked if her hand was tired.

A response of ‘yes’ stimulated a mini lesson from Daisy on how to use the tweezers. She explained patiently how to place her thumb on one side and two fingers on the other. Very cute.

Magnetic Mightymind Fun #Giveaway

Occasionally we need activities that are totally independent and Mightymind fits the gap perfectly.

The first cards explain exactly what is needed and require the child to place the needed tiles on the speech bubble. They then decide how to make a shape using the chosen tiles.

Here Daisy is beginning at the card labelled clearly with a 1. She could read numbers at this point but for prereaders I would have the cards in order so they could work their way through in a logical sequence.

The next puzzle had an option; choose a yellow square or two yellow rectangles.

And make a larger rectangle.

The puzzles are getting more complicated. Required tiles are still needed in the speech bubble but more problem solving is needed.

As the cards progressed, the puzzles became more challenging and the speech bubbles disppeared so Daisy had to chose the tiles heself.

Free form desgn on the fridge was also fun.

Mightymind is a problem solving geometric activity which is beautifully set up to gradually release responsiblily and encourage independent thinking. It is a puzzle that Daisy continues to come back to although she is now ready to move unto the challenge of Magnetic Supermind she still enjoys Mightymind.

The 30 puzzle boards are made from sturdy card and have no language, pefect for prereaders.

Counting with transparent chips

I loved using invitations to play with my children. Sometimes these invitations are independent and others I join in on.

In this case, joining Rose allows me to spend a few minutes one on one between chores. I focus totally on her and ignore the chaos for a quick break.

We used:

I set up the option of paper and crayons also.

Rose started by counting the chips and placed them carefully on the number.

I didn’t direct, just allowed her to lead adding information such as “yes, that is a number 2” or “yellow”. She is learning colours and doesn’t always get the colour correct. If she names an incorrect colour I will correct with “it is blue” but we certainly don’t stress about the necessity of knowing all the colours yet.

She liked the added challenge of trying to pick up the chips with a mitt on. It was entertaining.

Counting out five. This is a number she tends to avoid. Not sure why. Her counting usually goes like this; “one, two, three, four, six, seven..”

This was an extension lead by Rose. She placed the counter on the paper and said, “Please colour mama” so I obliged. Hey, who doesn’t like to colour. We named the colour together as we drew.
